Statement of Repudiation – In the Name of the Truth of the Ka’apor People
I, Ruruhu Ka’apor, local coordinator of the Guardians of the Alto Turiaçu Indigenous Land (Maranhão, Brazil) and a young leader of the Ka’apor people, hereby express my repudiation of the statements and publications made by Tuxa Tá Pame, who has no legitimacy or authorization to represent the Ka’apor people.
What is being spread by this individual is false. The project being questioned was invited by us, the Ka’apor people ourselves, based on a process of free, prior, and informed consultation, as guaranteed by our original rights and Convention 169 of the ILO.
Decisions about our territory are made by the true and legitimate leaders of the Ka’apor people, in accordance with our own forms of organization. Tuxa Tá Pame does not speak for us. He did not take part in our collective decision-making and has no support from traditional leadership or the Forest Guardians.
Our people fight bravely to protect the Alto Turiaçu Indigenous Land. We will not allow false leaders to misuse the name of the Ka’apor to spread disinformation or mislead society.
We demand respect for our autonomy, our decisions, and our truth.

Esclarecimento sobre a Consulta Livre, Prévia e Informada no Território Alto Turiaçu
Eu, Iwatarixa Ka’apor, comunicador do povo Ka’apor no Território do Alto Turiaçu, venho esclarecer uma informação importante sobre uma notícia que circula a respeito da Consulta Livre, Prévia e Informada realizada em nosso território.
Sim, houve Consulta Livre, Prévia e Informada no território do Alto Turiaçu.
Participaram dela 24 aldeias Ka’apor, o que representa a maioria do nosso povo. Apenas 5 aldeias optaram por não participar das manifestações organizadas no processo de consulta.
Essas 5 aldeias têm o direito de não participar, e nós respeitamos isso. Porém, é fundamental deixar claro que a decisão da maioria das aldeias Ka’apor deve ser respeitada. A consulta foi legítima e realizada conforme os princípios do nosso modo próprio de organização, respeitando a autonomia das nossas lideranças e comunidades.
Repudiamos qualquer tentativa de deslegitimar a decisão coletiva do nosso povo. A chamada “Associação Tuxa Tá Pame” não representa a totalidade do povo Ka’apor e não pode falar em nome de todo o território.
Reforçamos que os Ka’apor têm liderança, têm voz própria e têm o direito garantido à consulta livre, prévia e informada conforme a Convenção 169 da OIT.
I am Awahu Ka’apor, a communicator and a guardian with Ka’a Usak Ha Tá.
I live in the Turizinho village, within the Alto Turiaçu Indigenous Land. I am part of the struggle to protect our territory and the forest. As a communicator, I document what happens in our village and during the actions of the guardians. As a guardian, I am directly involved in monitoring and defending our land against invasions and destruction.
I support the REDD+ project because I believe this support is necessary to strengthen our fight. With resources from the project, we can improve territorial surveillance, purchase equipment, and maintain the activities of our guardians. We also need support to establish new villages, especially in areas near the boundaries of our territory, where land needs to be reclaimed and protected.
Defending our territory means protecting our lives, our culture, and the future of our people. That is why I support REDD+ as a tool that can help us in our resistance and in building the autonomy of the Ka’apor people.
The Ka’apor people's struggle is a fight for the standing forest, for life, and for our future.
Eu me chamo Jamoi Ka’apor, sou da aldeia Xiepihürenda, localizada na Terra Indígena Alto Turiaçu, no Maranhão. Sou jovem liderança da minha comunidade e venho aqui expressar o meu apoio ao projeto REDD+ que está sendo implementado em nosso território.
O REDD+ tem uma proposta que pode trazer muitos benefícios para o nosso povo. Ele tem o potencial de fortalecer o trabalho dos Guardiões da Floresta Ka’apor, que há muitos anos protegem nosso território com coragem, seriedade e compromisso com a natureza.
Como jovem liderança, acredito que esse projeto pode ajudar a garantir mais segurança, recursos e valorização do nosso modo de vida. A floresta que cuidamos não beneficia só o nosso povo, mas também o clima e a vida de todo o planeta. Por isso, é justo que nosso esforço seja reconhecido e apoiado de forma transparente, respeitando sempre a autonomia e as decisões coletivas do povo Ka’apor.
Nosso povo está atento, vigilante e consciente da importância de acompanhar de perto cada etapa do projeto. Queremos que os recursos do REDD+ sejam usados de forma justa, pensando no bem de todas as aldeias e das futuras gerações. Nós, jovens, estamos nos preparando para continuar essa luta, com organização, sabedoria e união.
Reafirmo aqui meu compromisso com a proteção do nosso território e com o fortalecimento das nossas lideranças, guardiões e toda a comunidade. Apoio o projeto REDD+ porque vejo nele uma oportunidade de caminhar com dignidade, com o pé na floresta e os olhos no futuro.
