From page 158 in Donald Gutstein’s book “Harperism”: Free-Market Environmentalism is a Frederick Hayek - inspired effort to replace government regulation and oversight with market transactions. The new regimes of property “ownership” will allow “well-functioning markets” to make better decisions than those by political or centralized authorities. Only the “owner’s” wealth matters; the wealth of the community is of little relevance. This is how the neo-liberals develop the financialization of Nature, and every instance of putting a price on any aspect of Nature plays into their schemes. And note that if your soil is so depleted by clearing and successive planting that it will not grow maize, then it’s too depleted to support forests or tree plantations. It may take 75 years or more for these soils to recover naturally, while humans stay away. https://dx.doi.org/10.1111/1365-2664.70017
