The Tohmle Statement was developed at the fourth Indigenous Knowledge and Peoples of Asia Conference on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, Biodiversity and Climate Change.
A huge cheer on the Tohmle Statement! It is so inspiring to see that how western epistemologies and ontologies of resource extractivism, technochratic solutions, market environmetalism, are challenged from indigenous perspectives and worldviews. I especially appreciate that insteand of offering policy recommendations on how to make current carbon market "better", this statement calls for "community-driven and owned mechanisms, standards and initiatives that differ from market models based on extraction and commodification of nature."
What I can see from this statement is not just an refute of current western environmental governance regimes, but it really pushes the frontline of indigenous-led knowledge, capacity, and principle building, which is urgently needed in this messed up world where the harmed are further harmed and marginalized, the benefitted just keep benefitting and dominating.
An excellent declaration! An important aspect is the "reliable public finance directly to Indigenous Peoples" which is usually everyone's last concern (if at all). This Declaration is so important in perhaps ending the creep of the "Crystal Palace" across the globe (See Pankaj Mishra's book: Age of Anger: A History of the Present). If you choose Life over Profit, the Crystal Palace must be rolled back and put back in its box (Pandora's?).
